Community Still Life Drawing 2025

Community Still Life Drawing is a free program that I’ve run each summer since 2022 in the community-owned Milky Way Garden in Parkdale.

Community Still Life Drawing offers folks a chance to connect with others while making art. Once a month from May through September, I set up a simple still life arrangement and invite folks to gather around a shared interest in drawing, to try something new, and meet new people. These sessions are uninstructed, but always start with a warm up activity, followed by lots of time to draw at one’s own pace.

Join in this summer! All skill levels welcome:

  • Wednesday May 28th, 6:30-8pm

  • Wednesday June 25th, 6:30-8pm

  • Wednesday July 30th, 6:30-8pm

  • Wednesday Aug 27th, 6:30-8pm

  • Wednesday Sep 10th, 6:30-8pm

Please RSVP by filling the form below.

Details:

Where do we meet?
We draw outdoors in the Milky Way Garden. It is a community-owned garden at 87 Milky Way Lane. It can be reached via the alleyway behind Parkdale Library, which is at 1303 Queen St West, at Queen St West and Cowan Ave.

Is the Milky Way Garden accessible?
There is a curb at the entrance gate. The ground inside the garden is unpaved, made up mostly of woodchips, soil and some grass.

Do I need to register?
Yes please! Use the form above to sign up. You will receive a reminder email a couple days before the event.

What do I bring?
Bring your sketchbook, a pencil, and any other drawing materials you like to use. And please dress for the weather as we will be outdoors!

What if it rains?
We meet rain or shine! The Milky Way Garden has a covered area, so if it is a rainy evening we will set up beneath the shelter.

About Community Still Life Drawing

Community Still Life Drawing started as a way to share space together after the distance and anxiety of 2020-2021. Initially presented in collaboration with the Parkdale Free School, it offered a different way to connect with others while engaging in one’s own creative spirit. Over the past three summers, we’ve welcomed so many people to the Milky Way Garden from all over the city. It has been a delight to witness not just the beautiful artwork created by participants at the end of each session, but also the new connections that have emerged as folks get to know each other.

The Milky Way Garden is community-owned via the Neighbourhood Land Trust, and is on the traditional territory of the Haudenosaunee, the Métis, and most recently, the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation. The Garden is operated by Greenest City and is tended to by countless neighbours and volunteers. I am grateful for their support and collaboration in making this program a reality.
