Emblems Series
This series of wall hangings is inspired by drawings that my son made on his laptop during a period of online learning during the pandemic. Making these pixelated doodles in was a way for him to deal with the boredom of the virtual school day. I wanted to translate those drawings into fabric, give those feelings shape and form, and in the process channel my own anxiety into moments of focus.
I made these pieces between 2022 and 2024, using new and repurposed cotton fabric. Working with textiles I already had on hand, I played with formal elements of colour and shape to create each piece. While some are faithful recreations, most of these wall hangings are my interpretations of his drawings.
My son saw his doodles as flags for made-up countries, but I saw them as sign posts through a trying time. For me, Emblems commemorates that time, and opens up creative possibilities beyond it.
These works were shown in the solo show Emblems, at She Said Gallery, in February 2024. (Photos courtesy of Anna Lisa Sang)
